Geography and Weather

The four seasons


The coldness of winter remains until the first of March which is also called Yokan, and in the middle of March, Sakura (cherry blossom) starts to bloom gradually from the south to the north. Sakura is the one of the flower representing Japan and events called Hanami (a kind of picnic) are held in many places.
In spring, it is said that the new year begins from April in Japan and it's also the time to start the school year. The entrance ceremony for new students takes place in April.
From April to May, the climate becomes mild and very pleasant. The variety of colors of spring flowers blooms widely everywhere. At the beginning of May, it's time to plant the rice in the rice fields.
There is a long holiday, about a week, in the month of May which is called "Golden Week". Domestic and international travels are very popular. People who started a new classes or a new work in april often return to their home to meet their relatives and get free from all the tension.


Rainy Season

The month of June is known as the rainy month or the rainy season except for Hokkaido. In addition, there is an absence of holiday in the month and it leads to a melancholic mood.



After the rainy season summer takes place. Summer season is known as bathing season around southern Japan.
In Japan, winter is dry and summer is humid and hot in the south of the country. Temperature during these days is about 30-35 Celsius degrees but because of high humidity, one can feel terribly hot.
In mid-august, there is a Buddhist festivals called Bon. In this time, schools and companies enter the long vacation and people often return to their home to spend their time with their relatives and friends.



In Japan, the heat of summer in southern Japan remains until around the first half of September, coolness returns in late September and the weather becomes more bearable. But nowadays, typhoons can occur from September until October.
From October to November, we can see the beautiful decorate mountains after the beginning of Autumn leaves.



In winter, there are snowfalls in the north area of Kanto (Shinshu of the sea of Japan side). In some areas, snowfalls are about 2-3 meters and one should fight against the snow.
On the Pacific Ocean side and Setouchi region of west Kanto, winter is relatively mild, snowfalls are few and the temperatures are not so low. Air is also dry and there are often sunny days. Local people use to say that the winter in southern Japan is easy to live with. Just the opposite, some areas suffer from the winter, traffic is affected by snowfall and there are many accidents due to the paralysis of the transportation.


Geography of Japan

There are four seasons in Japan that has been elongated from north to south.
Therefore, depending on the places and the seasons, temperatures change can be significant.
Thanks to a proximity of the sea wherever in Japan, the food is enriched by fresh seafood.
